A Fresh Start

Every so often everyone needs a fresh start. It gives us a chance to leave some things behind, and to improve, explore, and discover something new about ourselves. Tomorrow, is the first day of a new semester of school at Utah State University and tomorrow is my fresh start.

A fresh start is an opportunity to prepare for. I bought my first house this summer. It is a six bedroom, three bathroom, three story house two blocks west of USU Campus and I love it. Before Christmas I had five room mates plus myself living in my house, and with some shifting around now I have two plus me. I recognized that I can afford to have less room mates, and that I also feel a lot happier now because I have quite a bit more space. In fact, I even have my own home office now! In preparation for my fresh start, I moved my bedroom from the basement to the second story of my house and along the way I cleaned every place I could find. With six people in a house things got to be a bit of a mess. I believe that a clean and organized environment is a key part to being able to start fresh.

Goals and dreams are important when you want to start something new. I want to be a better me. So, to help myself achieve that I made some goals for myself. I have had a TERRIBLE sleeping schedule. 1) I like to stay up late. and 2) I used to work night shifts at Westhost. Thankfully, my work schedule has changed and I now work very regular daytime hours. So, one of my goals is to get up every morning at 6:30 and to be in bed between 10:30 and 11:00 every weeknight. Surprisingly, when I get into a good sleep routine I’m a lot happier and more productive.

I want to be able to manage my time better and feel like I accomplished more at the end of the day. So, I looked at myself and thought about where I was spending most of my time. I am addicted to my iPhone. I text, I check Facebook, I watch YouTube videos, I chat on other social networks… the list goes on, and I need to stop. My next goal is to get in control of my iPhone. So, I deactivated my Facebook and deleted my social networking apps. I know I’m not going to stop permanently, but I need a couple weeks of rehab to get me back on track.

Lastly, I am going to the gym. For real, six days a week and I’m going to be consistent. Part of my “wake up at 6:30″ goal is that every morning at 6:45 I’m going to be at the gym for at least 45 minutes getting in a work out. For the longest time I have been wanting to accomplish this goal and I’m not going to procrastinate anymore. I have had a gym membership at Anytime Fitness for a year now, and I bet I have used it… 30 times this year. Thirty days out of 365 is a terrible ratio, and I’m going to change that.

I’m looking forward to this next semester with my goals in mind and I’m excited for a fresh start.
